Finance Resume Template
Finance resumes are read like a schedule: the reviewer looks for the size of what you owned, the accuracy you held, the systems you ran and the credential you hold or are completing. Employers in this field also screen formally — the same posting at a bank or a manufacturer can pass through a portal that extracts text before a person sees it. This template is built for that double reading: numbers in a single text column, tools named the way the posting names them, and credentials stated precisely.
Free forever. No account, no card, no catch — your data never leaves your device.
Two candidates with the same degree separate on three facts: how large the numbers they handled were, how fast and accurate their processes ran, and whether the credential line matches the posting. Everything else in a finance resume is context. That is why the template below puts the summary and the technical skills block high on the page and gives every bullet a number — a dollar figure, a day count, a percentage or a volume.
What a finance resume template needs to hold
- Scale of ownership. The size of the P&L, portfolio, budget or entity group you were responsible for.
- Process outcomes. Close cycle in days, forecast accuracy, reconciliation counts, audit adjustments, controls tested.
- Technical tools with context. Excel is assumed; Power Query, Power BI, SQL and Alteryx are differentiators and belong in the skills block and in the bullets where you used them.
- ERP and systems. NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Sage Intacct — named exactly, because postings filter on the system.
- Standards and compliance. GAAP, SOX, ASC 606 and 842, audit support, control documentation.
- Credential status. CPA exams passed and licence state, CFA level, MBA with the year — stated without ambiguity.
Section order for a finance resume
- Header: name, target title, credential, city and state, phone, email, LinkedIn.
- Summary: three lines — years, the finance function, the scale you owned, and one result.
- Experience: reverse-chronological, with the number in the first clause of each bullet.
- Skills and systems: a compact technical block, grouped by modelling, systems and reporting.
- Education and credentials: degree, school, graduation year, then CPA, CMA, CFA or MBA status.

How to write finance bullets that carry weight
- Open with the number. “Cut the monthly close from nine business days to four” beats “responsible for month-end close” because it states a result before the reader has to infer one.
- Describe scale, not secrets. A dollar figure for the entity or portfolio you covered is normal on a finance resume; employer names, client names and non-public deal terms are not. When in doubt, use a size band.
- Separate accuracy from speed. Forecast accuracy, reconciliation ageing and audit adjustments are different claims; make each one clearly.
- Show the automation. Power Query, SQL and BI work are the most portable skills on a finance resume — name the tool and what it replaced.
- Keep control language concrete. “Documented and tested 18 SOX controls” tells an audit team more than “strong understanding of internal controls”.
Credential lines: CPA, CMA, CFA, MBA
Credential status is a screening field, so write it in a way that cannot be misread. For a CPA: “CPA, North Carolina — licence active”, or “CPA candidate — three of four exams passed”, or “CPA eligible (150 credit hours, exam scheduled)”. For a CFA: the level passed and the year. For an MBA: the school and year, with the concentration only if it matches the role. A vague line such as “pursuing accounting certification” tells a recruiter nothing and may read as an attempt to imply a credential you do not hold.
ATS notes for finance resumes
- Keep financial figures in the body text, not in tables or text boxes — a table of results can lose its row labels when the text is extracted.
- Do not paste spreadsheet screenshots into the resume; they are unreadable to parsers and unverifiable to humans.
- Write dates as month and year on every role and every credential line so short contracts and promotions are clear.
- Name systems in full once: “SAP S/4HANA”, then “SAP” — filters match the product string.
- Use standard headings: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education. Finance portals map those fields automatically.
Common mistakes on a finance resume
- Describing responsibilities without scale — “managed reporting” could be one report or forty.
- Claiming “advanced Excel” with no evidence; name the features you use and the work they replaced.
- Leaving the credential status ambiguous, which forces a recruiter to guess.
- Listing every course and training course attended instead of the certifications that map to the posting.
- Using a design-heavy template for a bank or a large corporate portal, where a plain single column is the expected format.
- Omitting earlier industry experience that explains the business context — a manufacturing analyst who has worked the plant floor reads differently from one who has not.
The layout above is one of the templates ShitResume ships, and every one of them keeps the numbers in a single extracted column so a finance portal reads your scale and accuracy in the order you wrote them. The builder runs in the browser and keeps the resume on your device, which matters when the document contains pay figures and entity sizes. Every template and every PDF or DOCX export is free, and no account is needed.

Frequently asked questions
What should a finance resume template include?
The scale you owned, the processes you ran, the systems and technical tools you use, and your credential status — stated precisely. Scale and accuracy are what separate similar candidates, so every experience bullet should carry a dollar figure, a day count, a percentage or a volume.
How do I show CPA progress on a finance resume?
Write the exact status: “CPA, North Carolina — licence active”, “CPA candidate — three of four exams passed” or “CPA eligible (150 credit hours, exam scheduled)”. Recruiters treat the licence, the exams and eligibility as three different things, so a vague line can cost you a screen even when your status would have qualified.
Is a one-page finance resume enough?
Usually yes. Finance bullets compress well because they are numbers, and one page keeps the reader on the scale and accuracy that decide the interview. Two pages are justified for senior roles with deal history, team leadership or multiple systems migrations to cover.
Should I include Excel and Power BI on my finance resume?
Name every tool you genuinely use and attach it to a result. “Automated 40 recurring journal entries with saved searches in NetSuite” or “rebuilt the forecast in Power Query” is evidence; a bare line reading “advanced Excel” invites a test you may not want. List only what you could demonstrate in the interview.
Can I put deal sizes and client names on a finance resume?
Use scale, not identifying detail. Dollar values for the entity, portfolio or budget you covered are standard; client names, employer-internal codes and non-public deal terms are not. When the number itself is sensitive, use a banded figure that still communicates the level of responsibility.
What keywords do finance recruiters search for?
Month-end close, reconciliations, variance analysis, forecasting, budgeting, US GAAP, SOX, audit support, Power Query, Power BI, SQL, NetSuite, SAP and the credential they require. Copy the posting's exact wording where it is true of your work; filters match terms, not synonyms.
