What an energy resume must include

- The phase you worked in: development, permitting, construction, commissioning, operations or decommissioning.

Energy resumes are read by two audiences at once: a recruiter screening keywords and a hiring manager who knows the equipment. Project types: solar, wind, storage, grid and oil and gas
Renewables, utilities and oil and gas share some vocabulary and almost none of the detail. Name the resource and the phase in the first bullet of each role, then add the specifics that tell a hiring manager where you sat in the project.
- Solar: trackers versus fixed tilt, DC/AC ratio, capacity tests, module and inverter vendors, O&M ticketing.
- Wind: turbine classes, wake modeling, availability targets, blade inspection, balance-of-plant work.
- Storage: round-trip efficiency, state of charge, augmentation planning, fire code and UL standards, market dispatch.

- When you move between sectors, translate the skill rather than the noun: a commissioning schedule works the same way on a substation and a compressor station.
How to quantify energy work
- Capacity and output: MW installed, MWh generated, capacity factor, degradation rate.
- Money: capital cost managed, dollars per MWh, savings from an optimization, PPA price.
- Time: permitting milestones, interconnection queue position, outage days avoided, commissioning schedule.
- Reliability: availability percentage, downtime hours, mean time to repair, inspection pass rates.
- Compliance: reports filed on time, audit findings closed, permits secured.
- Scale of responsibility: number of sites, crews, contractors or budget dollars.

- Utilities, EPCs and large developers run applications through portals that parse structured fields; keep one column and standard headings.
- Export a text-based PDF or DOCX rather than an image-heavy project sheet.
- Spell out acronyms at first mention: power purchase agreement (PPA), independent system operator (ISO), National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
- State licenses and certifications with their full names and status: Engineer in Training (EIT), Professional Engineer (PE), by state.
- Put the unit next to the number — 120 MW, not 120 — so the scale survives extraction.
- If you list a software package, be ready to say which version you used and what you produced with it.

Translate the work rather than the jargon. A commissioning schedule, an outage plan and a safety process transfer between a substation and a gas plant; the nouns change but the method does not. Name the transferable skill, then add one line about the resource you worked with so the reader can place you.
What numbers matter most on an energy resume?
Capacity and availability come first for technical roles: MW, MWh, capacity factor, uptime and outage hours. Do I need a PE license for energy jobs?
It depends on the work. Engineering roles that sign, seal or stamp designs generally need a PE, and utilities often list it as required or preferred. Development, analytics and operations roles usually do not. State your Engineer in Training status if that is where you are in the process.
Should I list programming skills on an energy resume?
Yes, when you use them on real work. Python and SQL are common in analytics and asset-management roles, and Power BI or Tableau appear in reporting-heavy postings. Describe what you built with each tool rather than listing the language alone; a dashboard that removed manual reporting is stronger than the word Python.
How long should an energy resume be?
One page for early-career candidates and two pages for engineers and analysts with long project records. Hiring managers want the project list readable at a glance, so trim older work that used a resource you are no longer targeting. A certification list or a publications block can spill onto a third page only when the posting prizes it.
Can I include a project I only supported part of?
Yes, as long as your contribution is stated precisely: the workstream you owned, the data you produced or the section of the commissioning you covered. Supporting work on a large project is real experience and belongs on the resume when the scope is clear. Claiming credit for outcomes you did not touch is discovered in the technical interview.
