CNA Resume Template
A CNA resume template has to survive a fast, practical read. The person screening it is usually a director of nursing or a staffing coordinator who wants to know whether your certification is current in this state, how many residents you have carried, which care tasks you can perform without supervision, and when you can work. Care work is staffed from a shortlist, and the shortlist is built from facts that are easy to verify: a current certification, a realistic resident load, the tasks you can do unaided and the shifts you will accept. A resume that leads with a personality statement and buries the certification in an appendix loses to the one that states all four facts in the first ten lines. That is the entire argument for starting from a structured CNA template instead of a blank page.
What a CNA resume template needs to hold
- Certification and state. CNA, STNA or nurse aide — use the exact title your state issues, with the renewal or expiry date.
- Training program. The state-approved program, its hour count and the year you completed it; add the clinical site if it was part of the program.
- Resident load per shift. “18–22 residents on a long-term care hall” is the number a scheduler is looking for.
- Independent care tasks. Which ADLs and transfers you perform without a second aide, and which lift equipment you are signed off on.
- Dementia and behavioral experience. Even one hall or one agency assignment counts, because that is the hardest shift to staff.
- Shift availability. Days, evenings, nights, weekends, rotating — stated as text in the summary, not implied.
Section order for a CNA resume
- Header: name, CNA credential, city and state, phone, email.
- Certification: the credential block first, with state, renewal date and BLS.
- Summary: years of experience, setting, resident load, populations and shift availability in two or three lines.
- Experience: reverse-chronological, with the resident load and the ADLs you performed named in the first bullet of each role.
- Skills: grouped into resident care, clinical support and safety so a scanning reader can find the match.
- Education and training: the nurse aide program and its hours, then high school if that is your highest diploma.

Resident details that must stay out of the resume
Your resume is a work history, not a care record: names, room numbers, dates of birth and diagnoses do not belong in it. Describe the population and the tasks instead — the acuity, the hall, the equipment, the number of people you supported — which is both safer and more useful to a scheduler.
- Describe the hall, not the person: “long-term care and dementia unit, 18–22 residents”.
- Describe the task, not the chart: “catheter care and intake/output documentation” rather than a resident's condition.
- Describe the equipment: gait belt, mechanical lift, sit-to-stand, Hoyer — the tools you are signed off to use.
- Describe behavior support generically: “redirection, routine and memory cues with residents with mid-stage dementia”.
Making shift availability work for you
Facilities hire on coverage as much as on experience. If you can work evenings, nights or every other weekend, say so in the summary as plain text — “available evenings and rotating weekends” — because it is the detail that moves an application from the pile to the call list. If your availability is limited, state it honestly and early: a scheduler who discovers it at the interview has wasted a shift slot, and that gets remembered.
ATS notes for CNA resumes
- Keep the certification, the state and the renewal date as selectable text in the main body — never inside a page header, a footer or a graphic.
- Use standard headings: Certification, Experience, Skills, Education. Nursing homes screen with the same systems hospitals do, and those are the names that map to their fields.
- Write dates as month and year on every role so a parser can calculate tenure.
- Write the credential both ways once: “Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)” — then the acronym alone is enough.
- Keep shift availability in the summary text, since it often sits in a filter field the scheduler types into.
Common mistakes on a CNA resume
- Leaving the certification and renewal date out of the top quarter of the page.
- Writing “assisted with daily living activities” instead of naming the tasks and the resident load.
- Listing every in-service session attended, which buries the transfer and dementia experience that decides your assignment.
- Listing agency assignments as one lump entry instead of separate placements with facilities, dates and resident loads.

- Forgetting BLS, CPR and first aid, which many facilities require even for aides who do not run codes.
